New to your Minuteman E20 Sport Traction Drive? Start here
Before first use: charge the batteries overnight before you run the machine the first time.
Set up, run and look after your E20 Sport traction drive scrubber. Everything here comes from Minuteman’s user manual and parts catalog, rewritten in plain steps, with the parts you need linked to the list above.
1Check it before every use
- Look under the machine for leaks.
- Check the rear squeegee for wear and damage. Turn or replace a worn blade: front blade (MM172162), rear blade (MM172163).
- Check the levels in the solution tank and the recovery tank, and make sure the screened float (MM172132) is in place. Minuteman warns that running without it in place can damage the machine.
- On wet batteries, check the water level before each use and top up with distilled water only. Do not overfill: fill 1/4 to 1/2 in (6 to 13 mm) above the separators.
- Close and fasten all covers, doors and latches, and keep hands and feet clear of moving parts while the machine runs.

2Load a brush or pad
- With the brush speed LED off (Minuteman warns that loading at high speed can damage the brush or the motor hub), center the brush deck over the 20 in nylon brush (MM172520-1), or the 20 in pad driver (MM172520-2) with a pad. Stack 2 of the thin surface prep pads that ship with the machine.
- Lower the scrub deck by releasing the deck lift pedal.
- With the key turned on, pull the bail handle. The brush engages onto the scrub deck by itself.
- Never lower the deck onto the floor without a brush or pad driver installed. The bristles can be damaged.
- The catalog also lists Nylo-Grit (MM172520-3) and Scrub Grit (MM172520-6) brushes, a fixed (MM833772) or removable (MM833772) pad retainer, and Aqua Stop brushes, with the medium nylon Aqua Stop brush (MM7951-03) marked standard.

3Start cleaning
- Turn the key to the operate position ( I ) and wait for the battery gauge to stop flashing. If it keeps flashing, see the fault codes in Troubleshooting.
- Lower the squeegee with the squeegee lift lever. The vacuum motor runs when you press the bail handle.
- Pick the brush speed with the brush speed key (low for standard cleaning, high for stripping, polishing and special jobs), then move the brush lift pedal from the home (down) position to the operating (up) position.
- Move the solution lever up from closed to the flow you want. With Aqua Stop brushes, the Aqua-Saver guide stops the lever at a low setting; slide its knob all the way forward for maximum solution. The solution solenoid stops the flow whenever you release the bail handle.
- Pick forward or reverse with the direction switch and set the speed dial (clockwise is faster; fully counterclockwise the machine will not move). Press the bail handle to drive. Work on level floors only: do not use the machine on ramps or inclines greater than 2%.

4Finish, charge and put it away
- Lift the scrub deck, turn the solution lever off and lift the rear squeegee. The vacuum motor stops after 10 seconds. To unload the brush, with the brush speed LED off and the deck lifted, turn the key to Brush Unload for 5 seconds; keep people clear of the deck.
- Empty the solution tank through its drain hose and rinse it. Empty and flush the recovery tank and clean the float shut-off screen. Do not clean the machine with a pressure washer.
- Charge when the battery gauge reaches the red zone, in a well ventilated area: unwind the charger cord from the electrical box cover and plug it in. Red is charging, yellow is 80% and green is full. The machine runs on two 12 V batteries in series (12 V 155 Ah (MM956704) or 12 V 140 Ah AGM (MM956158) in the catalog); do not mix amp hour capacities.
- Charging batteries generates explosive gasses. Do not charge batteries when open flames or sparks are present. Do not smoke.
- Rinse the brush or pad holder and the rear squeegee in warm water. Store the machine indoors where it will not freeze, with both tank lids open, the key switch off (O) and the key removed. For long storage, boost charge the batteries once a week.

What makes the E20 Sport different from the standard E20 traction drive?
The E20 Sport has a 1 hp (750 W) brush motor with two speeds, 180 rpm for normal cleaning and 370 rpm for stripping and polishing, selected with a keyswitch beside the circuit breakers. Its 20 in brush deck carries two removable 10 lb (4.5 kg) weight plates.

When should I use high brush speed?
Low speed is for standard cleaning, with or without the deck weights. High speed is for stripping, polishing and special cleaning jobs. Never load or unload the brush while the high speed LED is lit.

How do I unload the brush on the E20 Sport?
Make sure the high speed LED is off, lift the deck with the pedal in its home position, and turn the key to Brush Unload for 5 seconds. When the key returns to off, the brush releases and drops to the floor.

How do I take weight off the brush deck?
Lower the deck to the floor, remove the 2 wing nuts beside the motor, and lift one or both 10 lb (4.5 kg) plates off. Put the wing nuts back. With one plate fitted, move all 6 spacer washers under the rear wing nut.

How do I charge the batteries?
Charge when the battery gauge reaches the red zone. In a well ventilated area, unwind the onboard charger cord from the electrical box cover and plug it in. The status lights show red while charging, yellow at 80% and green when full.

Why won't my E20 Sport move?
Check that the direction switch is not in neutral, that the squeegee is raised when you reverse, that the traction drive breaker has not tripped and that the batteries are charged. If the battery gauge is flashing, match the code to the Diagnostic Codes decal.

Can I use the E20 Sport on a ramp?
Minuteman says the machine is for level operation only and should not be used on ramps or inclines greater than 2%. If you must cross one, avoid sudden stops with full tanks and slow down going downhill.

Places where Minuteman's documents disagree, and how this page handles them. If you are unsure, call 800-440-6723 with your serial number.
- The main assembly list (catalog page 7) prints the traction drive brush deck assembly number of the standard E20 at item 20, while the brush deck list (page 33) is titled with a Sport bill of material number and lists the 750 W motor. Both are as printed.
- The traction drive base list (page 9) names Sport versions of the electrical box and electrical box cover; the cover list (page 30) prints the standard bill of material number in its title.
- The base assembly list (page 11) names the standard recovery tank assembly; the recovery tank list (page 23) is titled with an HR bill of material number. The parts in it are as printed.
- The electrical box list (page 27) prints two drive controllers, a 24V 70A control at item 25 and a 24V 180A Sport controller at item 28, and does not say which machines have which.
- Battery lines differ between the documents. The parts catalog lists a 12V 155AH battery and a 12V 140AH AGM battery (page 7) and gives 140 Ah lead acid or gel in its specifications (page 3). The user manual (page 3) lists three other battery options (Crown 140 Ah and 135 Ah sealed, Trojan 130 Ah) that are not in the catalog. Confirm the battery for your machine with SES.
- Maximum current is 50 A in the user manual (page 3) and 32/40 A in the parts catalog (page 3).
- Productivity is 27,280 ft² per hour (2,534 m²) in the user manual and 27,200 ft² per hour (2,527 m²) in the parts catalog (page 3 of each). Both are shown.
- The user manual gives 380 lb (169 kg) with batteries and 240 lb (108 kg) without (page 3); the catalog gives 380 lb (172 kg) and 240 lb (109 kg). The catalog’s metric figures match the pounds, so this page uses the catalog.
- The user manual cover and page 8 refer to surface prep pads shipped with the machine by a part number that is not in the parts catalog, so they are not linked here.
- The user manual names an optional hour meter kit (page 16) and the catalog a solution valve conversion kit in a note (page 15); neither has a parts line.
- The user manual describes the in-line solution filter (page 24) without a part number. The catalog’s FILTER-SOLUTION E1720 in the new style solution valve assembly (page 15) is linked in the solution filter steps because the names match.
- The warranty terms on this page come from the user manual (page 43, warranty revision O effective 4/1/2016). The catalog’s warranty pages use an encoded font that does not read as text.
- Descriptions are copied as Minuteman prints them, including its spellings and abbreviations. The brush options list prints no quantities.
