Carpet Extractor Buyer's Guide

Quick answer

For small areas and the best soil recovery, choose a portable extractor. For large areas cleaned weekly or daily, a self-contained walk-behind or rider extractor pays off in productivity. Bonnet or rotary shampoo on a floor machine is the most economical, but recovers less soil and can damage carpet. Whatever you buy, look for low pressure, a single spray nozzle, a power brush and hot water.

Why extract?

Regular carpet cleaning keeps a professional appearance and extends carpet life. Treat spots quickly and extract periodically to remove surface stains and odors; skip it and stains can set permanently, leading to costly replacement. Hot water extraction (HWE), once called "steam cleaning" even though no steam is used, delivers a cleaning chemical, applies agitation or pressure, then vacuums the solution back up.

Features to look for

Low water pressure

You only need enough pressure to distribute water and chemical. Too much forces moisture into the carpet backing, causing long dry times, mildew and odor.

Single spray nozzle

One larger opening clogs less than several small nozzles, so there's less maintenance.

Power brush

A rotating brush almost always cleans better. Get one if you can.

Hot water

Check the manufacturer's temperature rating. The hotter the water, the better.

Carpet extractor FAQ

Portable or walk-behind carpet extractor?

Portables give the best soil recovery and suit small areas and detail work. Walk-behind and rider extractors are far more productive for large areas cleaned weekly or daily.

Is higher water pressure better?

No. Only enough pressure to distribute the solution is needed. Too much drives moisture into the backing, causing long dry times, mildew and odor.

Is hot water extraction the same as steam cleaning?

Yes. Hot water extraction used to be called steam cleaning, even though no steam is used.
